Legendary Kingdoms Zoom In – The Mordain Ruins

The desolate ruins of Mordain are not all together abandoned…

Ask anyone who has visited the Valley of Bones and they will tell you there are five cities in the country. They will probably roll their eyes as they say it, for the run-down settlements of the Valley would hardly qualify as a ‘city’ in the grand realms of Royce or Drakehallow. It was not always so. Once there were six cities, and the sixth was the most marvelous of them all – Mordain, a merchant city of vibrant culture and great wealth.

Before the Valley fell into ruin almost a thousand years ago, Mordain was a quaint little city, famed for its museums and libraries. In the wake of the Desolation of Abraxas, it was more resilient than most, and within a few hundred years it had become a city to rival Saltdad and Cursus. Alas, jealousy and religious spite ended Mordain four hundred years ago, when an unlikely alliance of priests and barbarians tore the city down and looted it.

Since that time, Mordain has become a favoured haunt for treasure seekers and hunters of mystic lore. Its catacombs are enormous, and no one has mapped them all. Deadly traps and hungry ghosts are said to guard the halls. Many young barbarians try their luck in the ruins, but few manage to get far. Besides, something awful dwells down there in the dark, for those unlucky enough to find it…
